Flagship project 1

Frontline leaders are a vital link in aged care service delivery. They’re at the intersection of senior leadership, multi-disciplinary care teams, older people receiving services and their families. Supporting these frontline leaders to work effectively, sustainably and to the full scope of their role is critical to building and retaining a capable workforce that delivers high-quality aged care.

ARIIA’s first Flagship Project explored how aged care providers in residential and home care settings can improve frontline leadership through role clarity and delegation, strengthened communication, and better wellbeing and development pathways. Participating organisations were not asked to implement a predetermined solution; the project supported each provider to use data and co-design to understand workforce challenges in their own context, then develop and implement a tailored intervention that responded to their needs. This approach deliberately created space for organisations to slow down, understand the problem before jumping to a solution, and to use co-design as both an improvement method and a capability-building process.

The project was informed by an earlier ARIIA-funded pilot led by St Basil’s Homes South Australia and Griffith University. ARIIA partnered with Griffith University’s A/Prof Katrina Radford and Dr Ellie Meissner as the subject matter experts who worked closely with the participating organisations.
